Das Werk des gebürtigen Südafrikaners Isak W. Koch zeigt die Synergien seines Schaffens als Kunstfotograf und Bildender Künstler. Seine Motive findet er in der Natur: In Flora und Fauna sowie in landschaftlichen Szenerien mit Vorliebe für verlassene Orte als visuelle Metapher des Vergänglichen. Vom Menschen künstlich Geschaffenes wird zurück gegeben an das, was aus sich selbst heraus ist - die Natur und die Zeit. Beides steht für Auflösung bestehender Strukturen, für Veränderung.
In dieser expressiven Werkserie "Extra-Dimensional Paintings" kombiniert Isak Fotografie und Malerei. Formaler Ausgangspunkt der Komposition und zugleich Bildzentrum ist ein Foto mit zumeist gegenständlichem Motiv. Isak verlängert dessen Fluchtlinien, die fallenden und steigenden Diagonalen in den umgebenden Bildraum und führt damit das Motiv über die Fotogrenze hinaus in ein neu geschaffenes Raumgefüge.
Dieses ist entweder wie das Foto gegenständlich gebunden und besteht aus motivisch abgeleiteten, den Raum durchmessenden Architekturgefügen oder führt in eine abstrakte Linienkonstruktion, die frei in einem Farbraum schwebt. Dieser Farbraum greift die Tonplatte des fotografischen Ausgangsmotiv auf.
"Ich sah oft, wie Leute ganz nah ans Bid traten, um zu sehen wo die Fotografie aufhört und die Malerei anfängt", erzählt Isak. "Das ließ mich über Zweidimensionalität der meisten Bilder nachdenken. Um es kurz zu machen, ich entschied mich, eine neue Dimension hinzuzufügen, indem ich eine weitere Leinwand hinzu nahm, eine auf der anderen. Die Malerei floss nun um die Grenzen der kleineren Leinwand und wurde zu etwas noch Eindrucksvollerem."
Durch die körperhafte Tiefe des kleineren Leinwandkörpers entsteht je nach Lichteinfall ein kleinerer bis längerer Schlagschatten auf der darunterliegenden Leinwand. Dieser Schatten betont die Dreidimensionalität des Werkes und nimmt Einfluss auf die Bildwahrnehmung. Das kleine Zentralmotiv scheint in optischer Tiefenwirkung den darunterliegenden Farbraum zu durchschweben, mal vor mal zurück zu treten je nach Sichtweise.

The work of South African-born Isak W. Koch shows the synergies of his work as an art photographer and visual artist. He finds his motifs in nature: In flora and fauna as well as in scenic sceneries with a preference for abandoned places as a visual metaphor of the transient. Man's artificial creation is given back to what it is out of itself - nature and time. Both stand for the dissolution of existing structures, for change.
In this expressive series of works "Extra-Dimensional Paintings" Isak combines photography and painting. The formal starting point of the composition and at the same time the centre of the picture is a photo with a mostly representational motif. Isak extends its alignments, the falling and rising diagonals into the surrounding pictorial space, thus leading the motif beyond the photographic boundary into a newly created spatial structure.
This is either figuratively bound like the photo and consists of architectural structures derived from motifs and measuring the space, or leads into an abstract construction of lines that floats freely in a colour space. This color space picks up the tonal palette of the photographic initial motif.
"I often saw people inspecting these close-up to try and see where the photograph ends and the painting starts." Isak says. " This got me thinking about the two-dimensionality of most paintings. Long story short, I decided to add another dimension of sorts, by using more than one canvas, one on top of the other. This also allowed for the painting flow past the boundaries of the smaller canvas, becoming something much more impressive."
Due to the physical depth of the smaller screen body, a smaller or longer cast shadow is created on the underlying screen, depending on the incidence of light. This shadow emphasizes the three-dimensionality of the work and influences the image perception. The small central motif seems to float through the underlying color space in an optical depth effect, sometimes to step back and forth depending on the point of view.
